Bet types: singles, accumulators, systems and handicaps
Why the bet type matters
The bet type decides two things: how much bookmaker margin you pay, and how wild the ride of your balance will be. Singles
One selection, one outcome. The margin you pay is that market's margin alone. Worked example: on a market with a 95% theoretical return, every 100,000 staked on singles loses about 5,000 in theory over the long run. Singles are the lowest-variance form of betting and the easiest to evaluate honestly.
Accumulators
Several selections combined; the odds multiply and every leg must win. The catch is that the margin multiplies too. Worked example: three legs at 95% each give 0.95³ ≈ 85.7%; five legs about 77.4%. Each-way and other specials
Some bookmakers offer each-way bets (a win part plus a place part at a fraction of the odds), first-scorer bets, or bet builders that combine outcomes from one match.
